Pedaling Through Night Fog
I have watched windstorms and beavers take these trees year-by-year since I started bicycling to work in 1998, brown belt replacing greenbelt (only better in karate). Boise’s namesake trees,¹ these cottonwoods, are weakened by irrigation that diverts water they need to properly reproduce.² Groups like the Boise River Enhancement Network³ are working to improve the situation. ___ ¹ Trail Image, “Meeting Captain Bonneville”: http://www.trailimage.com/meeting-captain-bonneville ² Science News, “Boise River’s Cottonwoods in Decline”: http://www.upi.com/Science_News/2009/10/04/Boise-Rivers-cottonwoods-in-decline/UPI-47551254637017/ ³ BREN website: http://boiseriverenhancement.net/
