Seeing the autumn-typical luminescent river mist, I stop and park at the dirt trailhead to walk a minute into the light.

It is the first time I’ve seen the owner of the old mountain bike that’s often parked beside the path behind the Quarry office buildings along the river. He looks homeless though perhaps “homeless” is the wrong appellation for any who can spend mornings along the resplendent river without need to check their work calendar.

I don’t have the freedom of the homeless. The nine o’clock on my calendar beckons.
