The kids have Thursday and Friday off school so I took the day off and the younger half of us went for a bike ride along the river.

We retreat early from the cold and wet mountains for the warmth of home before I speed to Boise on winding Idaho highways.

Led astray by evolving, unmarked forest roads, and trying to beat the rain, we end up bovine bedfellows, one of us nursing an injury.

My brothers and I ride for the first time as adults to camp in the mountains of the St. Joe Ranger District that we remember fondly from childhood.

My oldest daughter Laura and I ride together on the GS1200 through Smith Prairie for Trinity Lookout only to be yelled at when we arrive. We return through Featherville, not getting home until late at night.

I ride with a club I just learned about up Blacks Creek to the Y-Stop, over to Arrowrock then up to Thorn Creek Butte before an ice cream stop (thanks Sam) in Idaho City.

I ride north from the sweltering heat to attend Troy Days and ride with my brother Jesse around the forested mountains.

Having lately visited my first lava tube cave near Shoshone, Idaho, a friend and I decide to investigate the close-by Kuna Cave.

Another section of the path I bike to work is under construction. I guess when it's done it will be nice to ride a newly surfaced path for almost the full distance of my commute.

I have been biking to work for about ten years. I don’t often see ice flows on the river. It seemed I should record it though 5°F felt like a reason not to.
